Budget Committee 2006 ReportThe Budget Committee has set its goals for the coming year. Its main goal is to show as close to zero growth as possible on this year's (FY 03/04) budget. Foremost among the goals to be considered by the Selectmen is the need to balance the budget by controlling discretionary spending to avoid an increase in property taxes. Other budget matters to be considered include a policy regarding charitable donations by the town, and the logistics of formulating the school budget. The Committee will hold regular meetings through May to advise the Town Manager and Selectmen as they develop the 03/04 budget. Members of the public are encouraged to attend these meetings. Contact the town office for dates and times. The Budget Committee started its process of meeting and working with municipal and school officials in early February. At this time it appears that all needs of the community can be met without an impact on the local taxpayer. It is anticipated that the municipal budget will not exceed 3% in growth and the school budget less than 4%. Hopefully this increase will be minimized by the new properties being added to the tax roll. The budget committee feels that the ongoing success of budget building has been based on the cooperation of the selectmen and the school committee, the town manager, and the school officials working together for the good of the community. |
