Roosevelt                             *** RECYCLING EVERY WEDNESDAY***                            ***TRASH PICK UP EVERY THURSDAY*** July 2008 SELECTMEN/ MANAGER *   A special town meeting is scheduled for Thursday, July 10th at 7:00 PM at the town office in Prospect Harbor. The Warrant will include an article to consider transferring $100,000 from our general fund (surplus) to be obligated specifically to offset taxes committeed for the 2008/2009 budget year. Our current general fund balance is over $600,000 and shifting the $100,000 will still keep us within recommened balance from our auditors. *   The 2008 Ellsworth Area Household Hazardous Waste and Universal Waste collection program is being offered again this year. The event is expected to take place on Saturday, August 16, 2008. from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM, rain or shine, at the Ellsworth High School on Route 1A. Household waste items accepted: materials containing caustic flammable, toxic or reactive properties such as pesticides, polishes, lye, acids, solvents, oil based paint, swimming pool chemicals and old gasoline. Universal waste items accepted: materials containing mercury, cadmium and lead such as rechargable batteries, cathode ray tubes, fluorescent lamps, mercury thermostats, motor vehicle switches, PCB ballasts and thermomenters. This program is being funded in part by the Town and materials deposited will be free to residents. Applicants are available at the town office and must be completed before items will be accepted at the site. *   We are pleased to welcome Mr. Glen Grant to our police department. Mr. Grant is replacing a part time patrol officer (Mr. Devon Bohacik) that recently left Gouldsboro. He is and academy graduate and has many years experience in law enforcement. Also a special welcome to Mr. Gary Grovogel to our fire department. Mr. Grovogel has accepted the position replacing the vacancy of Mr. Tate McLean. He is a resident of Gouldsboro and has expressed interest in helping the department with the expertise of his fellow firefighters. Another great addition to our staff is Roni Saul of Prospect Harbor. Ms. Saul has been appointed as deputy clerk to fill the vacancy created by Ms. Carrie Sandstrom. She has lived in Gouldsboro for many years and we are confident she will offer wonderful service to our residents. TOWN CLERK *   ATV and snowmobile registrations expire June 30th. Renewal and new stickers available at the town office. *   The flags decorating Main Stree in Prospect Harbor were part of a program initiated by the Cole Museum. The Museum offered twenty-four free flags to the town if we would sell the same amount in honor or memory of a verteran. The program was successful and we have had many folks asking about purchasing them. The Board of Selectmen initiated approval to continue the program next year and we are now beginning to take orders. We hope to expand the display to other villages within Gouldsboro. The office is open Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM as well as Wed., 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM. If your request is and emergency call 911. If you need to speak to an officer for a non-emergency, please call 667-7575 and you will reach the Hancock County Sheriff's Office. They are available 24 hours, 365 days a year and will locate and on-duty Gouldsboro Officer for your needs. SOLID WASTE COMMITTEE *   At a Selectmen's meeting in May the committee recommended the Town adopt a sticker fee approach to help offset the rising costs of our solid waste costs. August 20th has been set for a special town meeting for the adoption of a Solid Waste Ordinance implementing the program. A Public Hearing has also been set for August 7th. *   Recycling and composting will reduce the solid waste costs for the town and this summer we are offering one hundred thirty (130) recycling bins, free to residents pledging to recycle. There will be compost bins available mid to late July at the town office. Call for additional information - 963-5589. HISTORICAL SOCIETY *   The July meeting of the Society will be held at the Old Townhouse Museum (452 Rte. #1) on Monday, July 7th at 7:30 PM. Josh Torrence, the executive director of the Woodlawn Museum in Ellsworth, will speak about the Woodlawn Estate (the Black House) and David Cobb's relationship to it. All are welcome, free admission, donations accepted. For additional information call 963 - 5530. *   Woodlawn Museum Tour: GHS members may sign up for a special tour of the Black House to be conducted on Sunday, July 13th at 2:00 PM, at the Woodlawn Museum. *   The Old Townhouse Museum will be open from 2:00 - 4:00 PM every Saturday during July.    Enjoy some time with family, friends, neighbors and your garden! There are an estimated 150 million                            July 4th cookouts!   Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness PENINSULA SCHOOL FUNDRAISING COMMITTEE: *   Our second annual auction to benfit our new school will be held on Sat., August 23rd, at the Winter Harbor Gym. RECREATION COMMITTEE *   Summer Exercise Classes: To those of you who are wondering, and those of you who don't know, we are holding our excerise classes at the Community Center at the following dates and times: Tues, Wed, Thurs., 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM (first and last week in July and every week thereafter) Sat., Sun mornings, every week 8:00 to 9:00 AM and Thurs. evenings, every week 5:30 to 6:30 PM. DORCAS LIBRARY *   The annual Dorcus Library Book and Bake Sale to benefit the library will be held at the Prospect Harbor Woman's Club on Saturday, July 19th between 8:00 and 2:00. You will find books for children, mystery lovers, cooks, travelers, and readers of every sort. Come early for the best choice of books and baked goods. *   The summer children's program has begun! Sign up at the library for a reading slot with the miniture Yorkie who love to be read to. *   Wednesday, July 9 at 3:00 PM - Maine author Lynn Plourde. Lynn was born and raised in Maine and is the author of many picture books, including "Teacher Appreciation Day," "School Picture Day" and "Summer Vaction." *   Monday, July 21 at 4:00 PM - Bill DiSisto with a live reptile presentation. *   On Sunday, June 15th, Dorcas Library honored at a reception many volunteers who generously give their time and energy to our library. LOCAL GRANGE NEWS *   Seaside Grange of Corea (64 Crowley Island) Annual Rummage/Bake Sale will be on Saturday, July 12th from noon to 4:00 PM.
