Permit Application Process
Before Submitting A Building Permit Application
Please take your time when completing your building permit application and make sure all required fields and supporting documents are included. Incomplete applications will delay the review and permit process.
If you have questions or are unsure what is required, contact the Code Enforcement Office at ceo@gouldsborotown.com.
How Long Does the Permit Review Take?
Once a complete application has been submitted, the Code Enforcement Officer has 30 days to review the application and issue a decision, as provided by Maine law.
Your Plot Plan Matters
A clear and accurate plot plan is an important part of your application. Please use the Example Plot Plan below as a guide.
Be sure to include measurements and distances, including the location of existing and proposed structures, property lines, well, septic system, driveway, and other relevant features. Providing accurate measurements helps the CEO review your application without needing to contact you for corrections.

Frequently Asked Questions
How far in advance should I apply for a permit?
We recommend applying for a building permit at least 30 days before you plan to begin construction. Building permits are valid for two years, so applying in advance can help ensure your permit is in place when you are ready to begin your project.
We understand that contractor availability can sometimes come up with short notice. Having your permit already approved and in hand can make the process easier for everyone involved and help avoid delays when a contractor becomes available.
Can I start work before my permit is approved?
No. If your project requires a permit, work should not begin until the required permit has been issued.
What if I am changing how a property or building is used?
A change in use may require Planning Board review or approval even if you are not doing construction. Please contact the Code Enforcement Office before changing the use of a building or property.
Do I Need a Permit for Solar Panels?
You do not need a building permit for roof-mounted solar panels. Ground-mounted solar panels do require a building permit. Please contact the Code Enforcement Officer with any related questions.
What about Plumbing?
