FAQ’s:

I was bitten by an animal or my pet was bitten by an animal. What do I do?

Contact our dispatch at 207.667.8866 and report the incident. If the bite pierced the skin, further follow up will be required by an officer handling your complaint. Try to obtain a description of the biting animal. If possible, determine who is the owner of the biting animal. Seek immediate medical treatment for the wound to avoid infection. Follow through with the instructions of the officer handling your complaint. Depending on the circumstances, you may or may not need a Rabies Post-Exposure Prophylaxis. See this guide about Rabies exposure which contains other helpful suggestions: Rabies Pamphlet

Do I have to keep my dog on a leash?

State law does not require that a dog always be kept on a leash. State law does however prohibit a dog from being at large (on another person’s property without permission and not under the owner’s control). The owner or keeper of the dog can be summonsed for allowing a dog to roam at large. This requires the owner or keeper of the dog to appear in court. Please make the necessary arrangements to keep your dog on your property or under your immediate control. The Gouldsboro Police Department handled over 50 animal complaints in 2018, the most of which were comprised of dog nuisance complaints.

Am I required to license my dog?

If you are a Gouldsboro resident and keep a dog that is 6 months old or older, you must license your dog each year with the Town of Gouldsboro. You must provide documentation of a current rabies vaccination. The fee to license your dog is $11 if your dog is not spayed or neutered. If your dog is spayed or neutered you must provide a certificate from a veterinarian and pay a $6 fee. After January 31st of each year a state mandated $25 late fee is required. If you fail to license your dog or maintain current rabies vaccination, you may be summonsed by an officer and be required to appear in court. You can also license your dog online at: https://www1.maine.gov/cgi-bin/online/dog_license/index.pl

If you are a former Gouldsboro resident or you previously licensed a dog at a Gouldsboro residence that you no longer own, please contact the Gouldsboro Town Office so staff can update town records–otherwise you may be considered to be keeping an unlicensed dog.
